Paul Verhoeven: Violence

 

Today im gonna talk to you about this old man, his name is Paul Verhoeven. This movie director its very important to my conception as a filmmaker, because his movies shocked me when i was a child. 

Verhoeven was born in Amsterdam on 18 of July 1938, and  yes, he lived the World War II and the Nazi ocupation, hard childhood. He talks about this years. Bombs falling from above, the city in ruins and he walking on corpses. That is part of his style: human fragility and pure violence. When the war ends, he saw amercian films and he fall in love in this art. He start to shoot films, and acquires his particular style: hyper realistic erotism and violence, human fragility and the human conflict. But he dont have success in Holland and was acused of immorality. But the american industry took him with pleasure. 

Maybe you know some of his american works: Robocop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers, The Hollow Man. All of them are in my personal favorites movies of all time. But im not the only fan of this guy. Robocop and Starship Troopers are cult classics, admired and studied for his commentary of the american society, the human existence and his particular style to talk about all of this: criticizing but belonging to criticism, with slight hints from his comment. Robocop its a movie about the human existence, life and death, living after all memory, but all of this under a fun and violent criminal story. Starship Troopers its a movie about facism, miliratied society and the war, but under lights and bullets and fun, under a empty but cleber war sci-fi movie. Acctualy, in his time Starhip Troopers was named a facist movie, but the critics now understand his mistake. 

Why i love this man? He inspired me not only to study filmmaking, he inspired my style too. How he can make shocking, stuning action packed movies, but with a complex and deep subtext. I want to be like Paul. You can see him directing in the Behind the Scenes, with a lot of energy. Acting like his monsters, screaming, yelling, jumping. Not behind a director chair, always in the ground, always in everywhere. I want to be like him. Its one of my favorite directors and, in some way, a teacher of mine.  

Food I Really Like

    Warning, now im gonna turn patriotic for a little bit. I will say a lunch and a dessert, both of national origin and of my childhood. Lets start with Pantrucas, do you know Pantrucas? Its an elemental and great national dish.  

It consists of dough in the form of squares that does not become hard or damp like bread, and is prepared together with vegetables or whatever you want (potatoes, meat), and is impregnated with that flavor. The sauqres, thin sheets of dough, are soft of taste, with an very particular sensation in the mouth, like Ratatouile if you catch more than one with the fork. And if they prepare it like my aunts or my grandmother used to, for a moment they will believe that Chile is the best place on earth. 

ANOTHER, Mote con Huesillo. Although I am not vegan, I am very happy with the national dessert, it is a vegan dessert. It mean everyone can drink (or eat?) this wonderful dessert. Its great in summer, its great without the dirty fruit if you want, the huesillo. Only the juice its so great. AND, my aunt prepare mote con huesillo but with strawberries! Its amazing, for some people even better. 

Both are neutral healthy if you consume it with responsibility, but Mote con Huesillo have a lot of sugar, careful. My family knows my love of this two dish and always let me be happy and gif to me some 1L of Mote con Huesillo or suprising me with Pantrucas at the launch. 

My favorite piece of technology

    I am a man of the present, technology its a very important thing in a lot of things of mine: My fun, my studies and my job. So, pick only one artefact of technology? Hard, to me. My camera, my smartphone, the internet himself. To this homework im gonna pick my PC, because its to some extent all of the things previusly mentioned. No, not Partido Comunista, i mean Personal Computer. 

Its a link to the internet, its useful to serch, to wright, to play videogames and make videogames, to see movies and make movies. You know, editing, scripting. My stuff. 

Dont know if this is good or bad, but whatever i wanto to do, i have or i can to do that on my PC. Im a gamer, i can play con my Xbox or on my Pc (or both). Im an editor, that software its on my pc. I have to wright, better on my pc. I have to serch info, download (steal) movies, on my PC. The smart tv and smartphones are, actualy, variations of pc, if you open one, in his soul its a pc. Its in my life forever, dont know how to feel about this.  

I know all of you have computers, i dont have to recomend one. You know the amazing and revolutionary invention that is the personal computer. Thanks you, Alan Turing.  

Why did i choose my major?

 This always was very easy to me, because i always wanted to make movies. When i was two years old, my mom took me to a movie teather and we watch Jurassic Park 3. And at that moment I fell in love with the cinema. I once came out of that room full of people, i never stopped thinking in movies and watch everything in 24 frames per second. It is because of that impact that marked me so much that I never even thought about dedicating myself to something else. 

As a child i made movies with my dads old VHS camera and my toys as actors, even before i can wright i made scripts with draws to show my ideas of movies. Later, in school with friends i made my first shortfilms and start to study filmmaking with books or videos, but when i tried to make a bigger thing, a longer film, that was a dissaster. My inexperience and arrogance in believing that I knew everything just by reading books on how to make films led to the project never being finished. Thats when i realized i need to study filmmaking, because i dont know anithing abour making movies, When it was time to choose, my parents knew movies and filmmaking its my passion and favourite thing in the world. But only with one condition: that it is in a traditional university. Thats how they let my study filmmaking, and here i am. Studying filmmaking, my dream, but at home. Sad.   

Who am i?

 

Hi classmates and miss,

My name is José Ignacio, but please call me Nacho. No ones call me José, because is the name of my father too. Only my mom calls me like that when she is scolding me. Im 21 years old, single, and im only son. I live with my parents and my grandma, who has an advanced Alzheimer. We live in Santiago, all my life. My family its very numerous, warm and closet to each others, before the pandemic we used to get together at parties or social meetings, where we laugh, ate, drink and dance.

I study Cinema and Tv (or Film and TV? Dont know the oficial name in english), this where my goal all my life, because all my life my dream has been become a movie director. My gratest passion, my bigest interest and my favourite source of fun always has been movies, i have seen a lo of movies. Currently, i work editing in a famous chilean YouTube channel about movies and tv series reviews and humor, that makes me always active in editing, talking about movies and obiusly paid, not minor thing to me.
